Don't Forget to Say Hello...
Jun. 27th, 2003 07:56 pmMy significant other passed away almost two and a half years ago on January 18, 2001. His remains were interned in Arlington Cemetary with full military honors.
A month ago, he received a letter in the mail from the US Army, stating that he'd been recalled and needed to report immediately to his local reservist station or be considered AWOL. I sent them his death certificate - again.
Today, he recieved a letter from the US Army, clearly stating "Important Document, Do Not Fold or Bend", it was, of course, folded in the mail box. Contained within was a very pleasant letter, congratulating him on reaching the date of discharge from the US Army Reserves, and a beautiful certificate "Honorable Discharge, United States Army, 18th of June, 2003".
At first, I studied the document in my hand, my mouth agape, something between distressed and furious. Then it occurred to me that every document, every phone call I have gotten from the Army has been dated or come on the 18th.
I miss you too, old man, sorry it took me so long to figure out you were saying hello.
