Now, don't you feel safer knowing the nuns are in jail and rapistst/murderers are set free?
Although the headline reads "for vandalism", the nuns were actually convicted of (felony) obstructing national defense and damaging government property.
The three nuns, ages ranging from 55-68, broke into a Minuteman III silo site after cutting the fence, wearing white chemical weapons suits, then used their own blood to paint a cross on the site, ultimately causing approximately $1000 worth of damage.
In reference to the nuns prior arrests at anti-war protests (all peaceful, however, technically unlawful because no permits were obtained), the prosecuting attorny said, "These ladies could not be deterred for the last 20 years. They will be deterred for the time the court sentences them".
The sentences turned out to be a range of time, the minimum being two and a half years, the maximum, three and a half years, all three followed by three years of supervised probation.
I can not and do not support breaking and entering or destruction of property as a viable means of protest. However, if any of you are still harboring any belief that our country doesn't take political prisoners, I think it's time you re-evaluate.

State District Judge Ross Sanchez sentenced Akers to 33 years but suspended them all, ordering five years of supervised probation."
