With two, you get eggroll...
Jul. 28th, 2003 03:40 amI got the schedules and conflicts out to the track directors, many have already responded, yay! I even took the night off from all things Dragon*Con. Ok, well, after around 10pm, but hey, I still took the rest of the night off!
I blew my budget and went to get Chinese food, then kicked back on the sofa with my computer, plugged some DVDs in and enjoyed myself.
First slotted was, Shanghai Knight. It wasn't the best film ever, Shanghai Noon was definately a better film, but I do love watching Jackie just be Jackie.
I think that the main problem is, at the end of the first movie, you feel like Roy O'Bannon (Owen's character) has grown up and changed, and in this movie he's pretty much back to square one. Plus, there were some almost cheesy sort of character names and references, not that there weren't in the first movie, but this was over the top. It was almost like they were trying to fit in as much as they could like that. At least the fight scenes were well choreographed, and Jackie's use of every day items while fighting never ceases to amaze me.
I also watched The Ring at
eugie and her husband's recommendation. I have to say, cut the first 15 minutes, start at the funeral, then cut the last 15 minutes (end with the recovery of the corpse), and it would have been the most amazing film I have seen in a long time. Everything between those two sections was interesting and served a purpose of advancing the story. The filmography was reminescent of the old Hitchcock movies, and had that eerie creepy thriller feel to it.
Unfortunately, they didn't cut those two sections out. The first 15 minutes was like watching some sad slasher flick, it reminded me of Slumber Party Massacre - it even had that weird film quality of the low budget flicks from the 80s. Then the last 15 minutes turned what could have been a brilliant movie into a gimmicky Hollywood kiss-the-arses-of-the-sheep because they can't think that cerebrally sort of film.
Of course, without those last 15 minutes, sure, it would have been predictable, but so what? This film wasn't about the end, it was about the journey to get there. It was a real shame to me that they felt the need to have the ending that they did, I thought it could have been a real cult masterpiece otherwise.
All in all, it was a good night. Now, if I can just get to sleep...

Date: 2003-07-28 04:31 pm (UTC)Hopefully all the delays with the Tribetrack won't be too much of a pain in the ass for you. I've started putting together the puzzle pieces that are the schedule, but it's slow going.
