Back When Things Were Simple
Sep. 7th, 2003 06:28 pmI was going to write about the incredible amount of idocy that runs rampant in the world today, the kind that can only be fully understood when it glares at you in the face. I have decided instead to write about something else.
When I was a little girl, my daddy owned a pawn shop in downtown Columbus, GA. It was a modest little store in a modest little town. Fortunately for me, it was right next door to a place called Orange Julius. I don't know if these little gems still exist in our world, but if they don't then the world has certainly lost out on something special.
In the summer, during school breaks, and at Christmas time, I would stay with my daddy at the store whenever I could. I would wrap presents at Christmas. The rest of the time, I wouldnsmile and wave to customers while marveling over the "rare treasures" his store possessed.
At lunchtime, my daddy would give me $2.00 and send me next door to the Orange Julius where I would get us two slices of heaven wrapped in triangluar shaped little plastic containers. Inside these little packages resided ham and american cheese with miracle whip on white wonder bread with the crusts cut off. I would collect up my sandwiches, potato chips, and two large Orange Julius', which to this day, I still don't know what they put in those, and my change. Yes, I said change, a whole quarter to be precise. Then I would go back to my daddy's store and curl up on a high barstool and we'd eat our sandwiches and drink our orange flavored sugary goodness and just enjoy the day.
It was a rare time, one that I miss frequently, when I was carefree and genuinely happy.
Now, if you will excuse me, I am going to go eat my little slice of heaven and reminisce.

Date: 2003-09-08 04:31 pm (UTC)I used to LOVE Orange Julius! There was one at Columbus Square Mall that I'd go to, after I would shop at the Merry Go Round for bad 80's clothes and parachute pants, LOL.
Hmmm...so where was your dad's pawn shop?
Hey, this fall we should organize a group camping trip to Pine Mountain when the weather cools off, and you and I can venture into Columbus and show our friends where we grew up. Then they can have a deeper understanding of why we are the way we are. : )

Date: 2003-09-09 10:04 pm (UTC)Back then, there was a little pharmacy on the corner, and if memory serves the shop was next door, then the Orange Julius, then a wig shop.
By the way, I practically lived at Columbus Square Mall back in the 80s. I still have a leather jacket that I had on layway for like 9 months or a year because it cost $130 (on sale). Which back in 1985 was a heck of a lot of money! It was at that time probably the single most expensive thing I ever bought clothing wise.
And what was bad about 80s clothes? lol I wish it would come back... I mean we got the hippy thing and the disco thing back. Why can't we have feathered hair, fingerless lace gloves, layers of shirts hanging off opposite shoulders, and leg warmers over our jeans??
